Time: It is the ultimate currency
We were at our children’s annual sports day yesterday. A voice welcomed us, thanking us for taking time out from our "busy schedules" to take part in the celebrations.
But why do we have such busy lives?
Why do we take pride in demonstrating, in fact, often making up stories of how busy we are? Why do people judge us unkindly if we don’t seem preoccupied?
So you preempt by constantly referring to your “calendar” to see if you could spare time.
Much like we went wrong with nutrition and exercise, we seem to have gone wrong with being occupied. More being better.
We are, as an outcome, constantly stressed.
Stressed when we are doing more. Stressed if we are not.
We forget to ask, more of what? What do you really want to be doing?
If you are not clear, spend the effort to discover. If you are clear, prioritize that over all else. Life goes by in a blink. It would be terrible to waste it filling it up with things that you don’t want to be doing.
The rest of the time? Fill it up with things that give you joy. Only you can know what that is, but what ever it is, prioritize that above all else.
There was a time when knowing how to hammer a nail was a sought after skill. Then came modern skills such as programming. Increasingly, skills are becoming commodities.
The only skill that will be hard to duplicate is originality of thought. The ability to think that which has not been thought of before. Everything else has already been captured by the internet.
Originality of thought comes from free time. Not from the life where you have to take time out of your busy schedule to attend something.
So consider not being embarrased if you live the unhurried life.
Time is the ultimate currency.
