Personalisation: is it only for the elite few?

Personalisation: is it only for the elite few?

Imagine a top athlete competing in the Boston marathon. She would go to extraordinary lengths to plan and prepare for the run. Hydration, fuel, sleep, to name a few.

So is a personalised program only for the elite few?

Our runner is Edna from Kenya. She has a unique muscle build. She processes potassium and sodium uniquely. Her ability to use glucose, fat and protein is an outcome of genetics, lifestyle an training.

So obviously, her needs for nutrition and hydration are unique. She has spent a lifetime training her body for it.

Would it be fanciful for you to emulate her by demanding a personal program uniquely catering to your need?

You and I may not be running a marathon as a career. Or even at all. But that does not take away from the fact that we are unique. The demands of our body are personal. Which means you cannot use a one-size-fit-all approach to your wellbeing.

So what should you do?

Start with the simplest version. The awareness that you are unique and your needs are unique. It is unwise to covet what your neighbour does.

Next, look at the most basic things that any elite athlete would do. Focus on getting your hydration right.

Chisel away. Make sure you understand your need for protein, carbohydrates and fat. Dont get swept away by social media telling you to eat protein or fat or carbohydrates.

Even if 500% tarrifs are about to be imposed on all of them.

The body likes balance. It likes to operate in a narrow range. It does not like being shocked. By anything.

Use your intuition. It is honestly not bad. Your body constantly signals whether it is happy or unhappy. Look for these signals based on what you are doing.

An elite athlete is just skilled at a particular sport. But the underlying mechanism of the human body remains the same, regardless.
