Peptides: what are they and why do you need them?
Peptides are small chains of amino acids that play essential roles in your body. They help repair tissues, reduce inflammation, and regulate hormones.
Why do they matter?
Unlike proteins, peptides are absorbed directly, making them fast and effective.
There are two kinds, endogenous, made by internally and exogenous from a supplement.
Some of the more commonly known ones that you may have taken as a supplement include those used to manage diabetes, blood pressure, and even chronic pain.
Insulin drugs such as GLP-1 or collagen supplements. Yes, these are all peptides.
If you took an antibiotic or an antacid, your doctor may have asked you to take peptides as well.
But can you get them naturally in your food?
Eggs are a fantastic source. The peptides in eggs, especially the yolks, support muscle repair and help regulate blood pressure. They’re versatile and easy to incorporate into any meal.
Fish is another excellent choice. Fish peptides promote heart health and have anti-inflammatory properties.
If you are vegetarian, you still have choices.
Milk, yogurt, and cheese contain peptides that improve gut health, strengthening your immune system. Fermented dairy, like kefir, combines peptides with probiotics, giving you even more benefits.
Legumes such as lentils, chickpeas, and soybeans are packed with peptides. These can lower cholesterol and support hormonal balance.
Soy comes with the peptide estrogen, mimicking what your body makes. Flax seeds and hemp seeds are another excellent source.
If you wish to add peptides, I have a strong bias toward whole foods.
Whole foods deliver more than just peptides. They provide vitamins, minerals, and fiber, which supplements can’t replicate.
It is not hard to abuse the intake of peptides in supplement form.
Side effects can include muscle paralysis, headaches, sweating, clotting and even build up of plaque in your arteries.
So, as always, tread with caution. Balance is the key to good health.
