Old Age - Bullet Proof Yourself
I’m unsure of your age. Regardless, age creeps up faster than you expect.
What is the best way to bullet-proof yourself from old age?
Obviously, eat well, exercise, sleep. But the thing that constantly surprises me is the value of staying busy.
Staying busy has many connotations. My grandfather passed at age ninety-two, working till his last.Being busy encompasses more than employment.
It is being needed, wanted and being productive.
So you could paint, sing, write a book, act in a play, or just surround yourself with friends who value your company.
Every day that you wake up, you have something and someone to look forward to.
Study after study has shown the benefits of being productive. A study in Neurology showed that stimulating activities such as reading reduced the rate of memory loss in adults.
Another study in Psychological Science found that having purpose in life helped you live longer as compared to those who did not have a purpose.
Social connections improve your rate of survival as compared to those who are lonely and lack companionship.
To simplify, imagine me writing at age ninety-two, knowing that all of you are eagerly waiting to read. Writing requires reading, learning and communicating.
It gives me a sense of purpose.
It allows me the privilege to create a group of people that I interact and learn from. It gives me a sense of community. That’s what I mean by being productive.
So regardless of age, build a world for yourself where you have something to look forward to. One in which there are others who look forward to having you around.
