Mood and Discipline: Is there a connection?

Mood and Discipline: Is there a connection?

It has been a stressful few weeks for the world. The global world order is changing.

Individually, we are specks and may have no role to play in these changes. But who ever you are, you are being affected big or small.

Can you disconnect how it affects your mood and discipline?

These past few days, many people I have been meeting have told me that their mood has been affected. It is natural. When the world is in turmoil, it will affect us.

But it is useful to pause and think about the process by which it does.

First, you will feel something. I am tired, irritated, upset, angry. Pick your poison. These feeling are natural. Even inevitable. It is your defence mechanism kicking in.

So accept that you are.

Acceptance allows you to move on to the next process.

Next, and this is important, your mind and body will tell you what you ought to do. There is a predefined chain of thoughts that you have taught yourself.

When I am angry, I shout. When I am upset I cry. When I am angry, upset, stress, anxious my discipline and focus falls apart.

But this is a program. You can change it.

By simply changing the narrative in your head.

I am disciplined and focused regardless of my mood. It may sound simple, too easy or even impossibly silly.

I can just tell myself that things are different and they will be? If only life were that easy.

But the strange truth is that your brain runs on narratives.

The ones you tell yourself.

Sure in the beginning it will not be that easy. You have years of practice following a specific narrative.

The lack of conviction comes from habit. Not reality.

Once you change the narrative for a while, the new story kicks in. It is a super power. One that you can build regardless of whether the world is in turmoil or not.
