Lifestyle: how do you know yours is working
The other day I was speaking at an event. Someone asked me a very pertinent question. I live life. I eat and drink. I am happy. I don’t go to a gym.
When I see those around me obsessing about their health, I worry if I am missing something?
Why can’t I live life on my terms without worrying all the time?
Excellent question.
My short answer was you should live life, but.
In the but lies an important question.
How do you know if what you are doing is correct?
To answer this, we need to go back to the most basic principle - homeostasis. As long as you are in homeostatic balance, your lifestyle is working for you.
Assume balance occurs when you are at zero. So deviations from zero imply that you are out of balance. Negative and positive.
We call it The Zero Score.
How far are you from your ideal? So if you wish to know if your lifestyle is working for you, measure and track. Measuring keeps you honest.
It prevents you from believing you are fine when you are not. Or it allows you to affirm that your lifestyle is working for you.
In both scenarios, you are better off knowing.
What would a zero score comprise?
Sleep, strength, breath, nutrition, stress and body fat, to name a few. If you are doing well on most scores and your symptoms are fine, the lifestyle is working for you.
But if you are not, then these issues are progressive. They get worse with each passing day.
Stress will turn into chronic stress. Body fat will trigger inflammation and then disease.
So you must live life. You must enjoy yourself. You must eat and drink.
But put in some guardrails to prevent living in an illusion.
The best guardrail is a measurement. We call it the Zero Score.
