Lauric Acid
Has anyone ever told you to stop consuming fat? If they have, they have probably done you a great disservice.
Not only is good fat such as ghee used to make HDL, the good cholesterol, some fats have something known as lauric acid, which has unique benefits.
If you have never heard of lauric acid, tune in.
Lauric acid, a saturated fatty acid, is primarily found in coconut oil. I first stumbled across it while digging into the science of fats. It is classified as a medium-chain fatty acid, which I will explain shortly.
Lauric acid has a unique ability to fight off microbes. Studies show it can eliminate bacteria, viruses, and even fungi, especially in your gut.
Coconut oil owes much of its fame to this property. Within the body, lauric acid is treated differently from other fats.
Medium chain fatty acids head straight to the liver.
There, it gets turned into energy fast, the science behind the espresso with coconut oil also known as bullet proof coffee. That’s why some call it a quick fuel source.
Athletes and keto fans love it for that reason. I have used it to skip breakfast.
Lauric acid also bumps up HDL. However, excessive consumption can also raise LDL.
So should you add coconut oil or lauric acid to your diet? Yes, absolutely, with a few caveats!
Remember there is no free lunch.
Like other fats, this is high in calories. So if you are already struggling with weight, high cholesterol, high triglycerides, blocked arteries or have a high calcium score, use with caution.
While the coconut oil itself may not tip you over, eating more calories than you need, what ever the form, will add up to excess fat stored.
Do not use it as a fad to stave off hunger. Remember, eating a balanced diet, full of nutrition is the key to long-term sustainable good health.
Coconut oil will never replace fruits or vegetables.
