Indulgence: how can you recover?

How can you recover from a day of indulgence? In fact, can you recover from a day of indulgence at all?

Yesterday was the festival of holi, the celebration of the triumph of good over evil. Traditionally, in our home, we feast on this day. Savouries, fried food, sweets. The works.

In my case, my consumption is easily three times what I would normally eat.

So how can I recover?

My journey started ten years ago. I lowered my baseline weight. I increased my body muscle. Years passed while my body rested and recovered.

So while the excesses show, my ability to go back to my baseline is quick. My body can withstand the shock.

Now imagine you have not done this so far. How would your body react?

Your body would convert the excess into fat within hours. Your blood sugar might rise rapidly and then drop precipitously.

You would be hungry again, adding insult to injury. So any hope that you would repent and avoid food for days goes out of the window.

So what can you do?

Live. There is no point in stressing about what has happened. The food has already been converted to stored fat. Unless you intend to fast for a week, you cant really undo anything.

Look at your need to balance as something that ought to happen over a month, not within twety-four hours. Be mindful about what you do over the next few weeks.

Cut, trim. Substitute with healthier, lower calorie options when you can. Look up the difference in calories between a hundred grams of mushroom and paneer (cottage cheese) if you are wondering what substitution means.

Slowly, gradually, your body will forgive your excess.

But if you really want to build capacity, work on a long-term program. Test your blood profile to learn what the impact was on your body.

Reduce your baseline weight. Build muscle. Build an active life. One that has you burning thousands of calories everyday.

That is the only way to feast like a king.
