Fundoplication
A cure for severe acid reflux
Don’t get thrown off by the heading. If you have acid reflux or hiatal hernia, you should know more about a Nissan fundoplication procedure.
Over twenty-five percent of the population worldwide suffers from acid reflux.
The hiatus is a small opening between the oesophagus and stomach. When the stomach bulges out through this opening, you get a hiatal hernia.
The protrusion prevents the valve in the hiatus from closing properly. When this happens, acid from your stomach leaks into your oesophagus, giving you acidity. Symptoms can include burning, pain or difficulty in swallowing, hoarseness in the throat, or asthama.
Acidity caused by a hiatal hernia can be hard to treat through conventional methods.
That is why a fundoplication procedure.
In a fundoplication procedure, the surgeon is attempting to tie the upper part of your stomach, also known as the fundus.
The fundus is tied around the oesophagus, removing the obstacle, allowing your valve to close. All of this can be done laproscopically, which means using a camera and operating largely from the outside.
Over fifty percent of people over the age of fifty, especially those who are overweight are at risk of a hiatal hernia and the resulting acidity.
So what can you do to prevent this condition?
Your body is fairly forgiving. Imagine you went from being sixy kilos to ninty. Your body would stretch and pull to accomodate the extra.
But even your body has limits. Sometimes the pressure on your organs are so high and the muscles around your organs weak, that a part of the organ can push through the muscles. That is a hernia. You can get several types.
I know I sound like a record player on repeat. Excess weight and lack of exercise are not optical issues. They are medical isssues.
