Fine tuned refers to a concept in the study of the Universe.

In a nutshell, it refers to the concept that attempts to explain a force or power that created the Universe. God, if you are spiritually inclined.

The theory is based on a core set of facts about the Universe. Life and the Universe would not be possible if these facts were even slightly different.

Hence the notion of a finely tuned world, and a hidden power behind it.

Let us take gravitational pull. It exerts pressure on a galaxy. The gravitational force is exactly 10⁻⁵. If it were any different galaxies would either collapse on themselves or be pulled apart.

The ratio of gravitational force to electromagnetic force is exactly 10³⁶. If it were any different the life of the Universe would have been no more than 10,000 years. Clearly not sufficient time for life to evolve.

It is not my intention to bore you with astrophysics. There are several such constants.

Instead, I ask a question.

Did the Universe self-create in a manner that was perfect for life, or did a higher power fine tune it so that the Universe and we within could exist?

If you think the answer is obvious, perish the thought. It is hotly debated.

There are those that say this is a recursive argument. We exist. We are looking around us for conditions that allow us to exist and so we find it.

Think of it this way. The brain of the computer is looking at the structure of the computer and saying “wow, amazing to see all the conditions required for me to exist, do!”

There are those who say, but we created the perfect conditions for the computer to exist and so when it looks, it would obviously find those conditions.

In the case of the Universe, who is the “we?”
