Fermented foods are the new celebrities in town. Probiotics, natural or factory made are the flavour of the season.

But can fermented food also cause harm?

Probiotics have live bacteria. These bacteria are required for a healthy gut.

But not everyone reacts to them the same way.

When you eat fermented food, you’re introducing a new set of microbes into your gut.

If your gut is already inflamed or imbalanced, this sudden arrival can cause trouble.

Your digestive system may struggle to adapt.

Gas is a common byproduct. The bacteria in fermented foods release gases as they digest carbohydrates.

This is normal.

But if your gut microbiome is sensitive, it can lead to bloating, cramps, or discomfort.

Another reason is histamine. Many fermented foods, like sauerkraut or kimchi, are high in histamine.

If your body cannot break down histamine properly, you may feel nauseous, itchy, or get stomach pain.

If you have had a preexisting condition, it matters.

People with IBS or small intestinal bacterial overgrowth often react badly to fermented foods.

These foods can fuel the wrong bacteria and worsen symptoms.

Obviously, how much you eat matters. A small spoonful might help digestion.

A large helping of kefir might overwhelm it. Introduce fermented foods slowly. I know of people who have reacted badly to wine, for example.

Learn to understand how your body responds.

Also, check what the food is fermented with. Some are high in salt, sugar, or spices.

These additives can irritate your stomach lining.

Fermented foods are wonderful for you.

But like with everything else in life, you need to be mindful of what you are doing and under what circumstances.

If you feel bloated, gassy, or uncomfortable after eating them, reduce the amount.

Or stop for a while. Let your gut settle.

Your gut is a fertile ground for bacteria to flourish. Add too many new things too quickly, and you’ll get pain instead of good digestion.
