Flu: The effect on minerals

Everyone I know is getting flu. Body aches, sweats. Some with high fever.

But did you know that flu affects your mineral balance?

When you get flu, several key minerals like magnesium, zinc, and potassium get depleted.

So what is going on?

First, the immune system needs energy to fight. Magnesium powers many immune reactions.

Zinc activates white blood cells. Potassium balances fluids inside cells. The more intense the battle, the faster you burn through these minerals.

Second, fever makes you sweat. Sweat carries out minerals, not just water. Each drop lost pulls electrolytes out with it.

Don’t replace them and levels fall quickly.

Third, infections change how your body handles minerals. Stress hormones rise. They shift magnesium and potassium into cells and increase loss through urine.

Zinc gets pulled into tissues to fuel repair and immune activity. This leaves blood levels low.

Fourth, appetite often drops when you are sick. You may eat less without realising it. Fewer nutrients come in when your body needs more.

So what should you do?

It is not for nothing that they ask you to focus on hydration. Water alone is not enough. Add electrolytes or drink coconut water to replenish potassium.

Broths and soups rich in minerals are excellent too.

Eat easy-to-digest, mineral-rich foods. Bananas, avocados, and leafy greens help restore potassium and magnesium.

Pumpkin seeds and lentils are significant sources of zinc and magnesium.

Consider supplements if your intake is low. Magnesium glycinate is gentle on the stomach. Zinc lozenges can boost levels quickly.

Finally, rest. I cant emphasize the value of rest enough. Allowing the body to heal conserves minerals.

I was guilty myself. With flu like symtoms I decided to travel. I came back home tail tucked between my legs as my symptoms got worse.
