Understanding Bleeding Gums: Causes, Symptoms, and Solutions
Are your gums bleeding?
If they are, I’ll explain why and what you can do to prevent or reduce it.
The primary cause is gum disease, also known as gingivitis.
The buildup of bacteria on your teeth causes gingivitis. The consumption of sugar and starchy food especially contributes to the buildup of these bacteria.
So the best cure for this is to maintain excellent oral hygiene. Regular brushing and flossing.
Since for many people brushing and flossing caused the bleeding, it is counterintuitive to go back and b. & f. But it is essential that you do.
Flossing in particular can cause bleeding, especially if you are not used to it. It surprised me to learn that the cause was inflammed gums from the bacteria. Regular flossing reduces the bacteria and the bleeding.
Other factors for bleeding gums including hormonal changes, a hard brush, improper technique while brushing and pregnancy. A deficiency of vitamin c, also known as scurvy can also cause it, though the odds of that happening in modern society is low.
So what is the best way to reduce bleeding gums?
Brush your teeth twice a day. Use a proper brush preferrably non-plastic. A manual toothbrush will do. Brush for at least 30-40 seconds both front and back and both lower and upper teeth.
I have not read any evidence to show the you need fluoride. So coconut oil and salt will do for toothpaste. Make sure that you use floss. Floss your teeth and then brush and rinse.
You do not need mouth rinse, especially those that have chemicals in them. The best mouth rinse is sesame or coconut oil. Rinse for up to two minutes. Make sure that you do not swallow after rinsing.
Avoid excessive consumption of sugary foods.
