Abnormal Tachycardia
Why does your heart beat abnormally fast.
Does your heart beat fast for no reason at all? At rest or if you have taken a few steps?
If it does, you may be suffering from a condition called abnormal tachycardia.
Abnormal tachycardia refers to a condition where the heart beats faster than normal at rest.
A normal resting heart rate for adults typically ranges from 60 to 100 beats per minute (bpm). When the heart exceeds this range, it is considered tachycardia.
Just to be clear, if your heart is beating faster because of activity, such as exercise or even stress, that is a normal response. It is not considered to be tachycardia.
Tachycardia arises when the heart races without any clear trigger, a phenomenon known as abnormal or pathological tachycardia.
There can be several reasons. Your heart is manipulated by electrical signals. These signals are generated in your pace maker, known as the sinoatrial (SA) node.
Any abnormality in the signal can make your heart beat faster. Damaged tissues, a previous heart attack, plaque in your arteries or high blood pressure could be some of the reasons.
Coffee, alcohol and an over-active thyroid are some of the other reasons.
Symptoms include palpitations, shortness of breath, chest pain, lightheadedness, and fainting.
So what can you do in case you suffer?
Lifestyle modifications, such as cutting down on the offending stimulus, such as coffee or alcohol, will help. If you have a thyroid condition, treating the condition will help. Doctors may prescribe you a beta blocker.
Perhaps the best thing you can do is to regulate your heartbeat.
The heart beats in response to signals from your body for the need for blood and oxygen. Faster or slower is a response to this signal.
So if you breathe well, slow deep breaths, your body is well oxygenated.
Next, if your minerals are balanced, you will efficiently send signals to your heart to beat.
Finally, if your heart muscles are strong, they can pump the approximately five litres of blood effectively.
Collectively, your chances of reducing your abnormal heart beat is better.
