Words – Doing trumps word play

September 18, 2022

Words. You may not think you are well versed in writing or speaking. But we have a way with words. You may not compete with Shakespeare, but in your own head, you are the master of words. Does the ability to use words come at a price? I would like to argue yes, so bear with me while I do.

Playing with words in your head is easy. It requires little effort. You and I could, for example, debate the virtues of one form of exercise over another. We could argue on the virtues of slow squatting a few times versus repetition. It would make for clever arguments.

If you somehow convinced me, you would get a high from hormones. There, you showed me, didn’t you? If you didn’t convince, you could get a high from telling yourself I am the village idiot. Either ways, playing with words in your head, you could leave pleased with yourself.

But here is the thing. Doing is a lot better than thinking about doing. No matter what words or expressions you use. No matter if your verbal skills actually would put Shakespeare to shame. Its not the same. Ten minutes of doing puts a hundred hours of thinking to shame.

We are all seduced by the avalanche of information. Short bursts of information made available to us in easy to digest formats. Instagram has stories, Youtube has shorts. Our attention is short. We see snippets of life. This essay, for example. It is easy to argue of the merits or demerits of my words. But reading is not the same as doing. Thinking about doing is not the same as doing. Doing trumps everything.

So don’t get seduced by word-sports, a term I have coined. Analyse something if you need to. Check something if you need to. Doing trumps everything.
