Skinny – Can you eat anything and still remain thin?

September 17, 2022

Skinny! Who wouldn’t want to labelled skinny? In a world where thin is beautiful and models have little more than bones on them, being thin seems to be a blessing. I will leave the moral argument aside for the moment. How on earth do some people eat and drink anything and still manage to remain thin? Is there some magic hack that they are not telling you about?
The fat that we see (or do not see) is stored in the form of triglycerides. Fat cells are the store house for triglycerides. If your weight went up, you accumulated more triglycerides in your fat cells. The fat cells accommodate the extra by getting larger. The fat cells shrink when you lose the weight. Generally speaking, the number of fat cells do not change. So then, how is it possible that your friend can eat anything and yet their fat cells do not expand. Why do they have a waist size that is the envy of all?
In a documentary called “The Secret of Thin People,” a group followed a few people who were thin. The thin group was thin, regardless what they did, or so it seemed. Using video camera’s they followed these people everywhere.
They found that thin people do not defy the law of physics. There is no such thing as a free lunch. When the person had a large meal or seemed to have eaten “anything,” it was followed up by sensible eating. Also, relatively speaking, they were more active than the comparison group. So simply put, they were managing their total energy balance over the long run.
I can give you my own example. I eat much more on certain days and less the rest of the week. In the week, I have balanced my energy. My weight remains the same. So, no, you cannot eat and drink anything you want and still remain thin.
