Enzymes are the chemical machinery that drives life itself. They’re what make up your cells, tissues and organs. They’re also present in every living thing on Earth – even bacteria! Without them we wouldn’t be able to function as human beings or even animals in general.
Enzymes are proteins that speed up chemical reactions. They are catalysts, meaning they increase the rate of a reaction. Think of it like the fuel that helped you get a fire started. Except in this case, they do not get consumed themselves. They can even keep performing their function over and over again.
Its almost like magic. Your body would be unable to break down or “burn” the food without enzymes. Enzymes help lower the amount of energy required to get the fire started, so to speak.
In order for enzymes to work they need a substrate molecule. A substrate molecule is something that will convert into another substance. Sometimes the substrate could be other cells in your body or even another organism.
Enzymes are the workhorses of life. They do everything from breaking down food, to healing wounds and even digesting food. Not unique to human beings, they are even found in bacteria. In your body, they make up 40% of your body mass. Think about that the next time you are trying to lose weight.
There are two types – metabolic and digestive. Metabolic which exist in all cells. They are responsible for the production of energy. Digestive which are only produced by the gut. Digestive enzymes break food down so that you can use it to feed and nourish your body. Digestive enzymes include amylase, lipase and proteas. Amylase made in your saliva and stomach and help break down carbohydrates. Lipase made in your pancreas and help break down fat. Proteas made in the pancreas and help break down protein.
